Why did you decide to become an Academic Advisor?

After teaching FYEX courses as a GA, I knew I wanted to work with students and help them succeed. Academic advising is a great fit for that, and I am excited to be in a position where I can help guide students along the path to achieve their academic and career goals.

Why/how did you decide what you wanted to major in in college?

As an undergraduate, I struggled to figure out what I wanted to do, and I changed majors twice in my first three semesters. I renewed my passion for journalism after being on the staff of my high school yearbook and I developed my passion for government while being involved with ASNMSU. My overall involvement on campus influenced my passion for educational leadership and administration and would lead me to further continuing my education as a graduate student and becoming an academic advisor.

Tell me something about NMSU that you wish more students knew about:

I wish more students knew about the plethora of resources we have on campus that can be beneficial to their success. Students have access to all the tools they need to succeed in their studies, and we are here to help them along the way.

What extra/co-curricular activities did you participate in as an undergraduate?

I was involved with ASNMSU as a Roadrunner during my first year and then served three terms as an Arts and Sciences Senator. I served on the RGH, South Campus, and Chamisa Hall Councils and held the Residence Hall Association positions of Director of Public Relations, President, and Director of Programming. I was involved with the development of Juniper Hall, and I toured the construction site while serving as the RHA President. I served on the IACURH Regional Board of Directors during the final year of my undergraduate studies. I have been an active member of the National Residence Hall Honorary since 2016 and continue to live on campus as a graduate student. I attended 11 IACURH/NACURH conferences throughout my involvement with Housing. I was involved with the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and attended two National Conventions. I also was an Arts and Sciences Student Ambassador, Presidential Ambassador, and HEST Student Ambassador.

Did you face any challenges while in college?

Like many students experience, I struggled at first to adjust to college after being an overachiever in high school and after a rough semester, I lost institutional scholarships by falling .01 of a GPA point below the minimum required to maintain them. While I thought it was the worst thing to ever happen to me at the time, I still had my Lottery Scholarship and was able to quickly recover from that moment once I became more passionate with my studies and found the right major. A single rough semester isn’t going to make or break your college experience and you can still get into graduate school or find employment with a C- in Calculus II on your transcript.
