Why did you decide to become an academic advisor?

I want to be a support person for the students especially the ones who are first-generation. Parents encourage their children to attend college but sometimes don’t know where to begin. I want to mentor the students in their education journey and help them with what I can.

Why/how did you decide what you wanted to major in college?

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher! I used to play teacher when I was younger and make a schedule with the subjects, my “students” were my brother and younger cousins! I love to teach and find satisfaction when students enjoy leaning.

Did you face any challenges while in college?

Being a minority is always a challenge. I was one of the few Mexicans attending college in Washington, which was intimating. I often asked myself if I should continue because I didn’t feel comfortable. There were instructors who weren’t helpful and saw me as Mexican who should be working instead of going to school. I put this aside and focused on my studies and was able to graduate!
