Biography

Isabel is a Las Cruces native who, of course, loves going to the farmers market most weekends and eating green chile on everything. In high school she participated in the Trio Upward Bound program which assisted her transition into college. As a first-generation college graduate, she initially struggled to decide on a career path but, with the help and support through the TRIO program mentors, she found direction and earned a degree in elementary education in 2019. During her time in college, she was a part of Project Elevate where she learned how to support families and students learning English as a second language. After teaching 5th grade for a few years, she discovered a passion for supporting students in higher education and transitioned to an advising role, where she’s been for the past three years. In her free time, she enjoys watching anime, attending any and ALL types of sporting events she can and throwing themed parties for her friends and family.

Why did you decide to become an academic advisor?

I became an academic advisor because, while I was fortunate to have the support of family, friends, and mentors during my time at NMSU, not all students have that same network. I want to be able to offer them guidance and peace of mind as they prepare for the next semester, helping take the right steps toward achieving their academic and career goals. I believe that students all have something they are great at. My role as an academic advisor is to help students identify and use their strengths to achieve their short-term and long-term goals, both academic and otherwise

Tell me something about NMSU that you wish more students knew about.

I wish more students would take advantage of the resources available to them, like tutoring centers and groups that provide support such as TRIO or the Student Success Center. While it can feel intimidating or nerve-wracking to ask for help, these resources can provide the support needed to succeed in a class, quickly get answers to important questions or be an objective person when making a big life decision. They can make a big difference in a student's academic journey.
