Rudy Hernandez
Biography
Hi, I’m Rudy Hernandez—Academic Advisor, mountain biking enthusiast, and proud NMSU alum. I was born in Salt Lake City and raised in the wide-open spaces of northern Nevada, where I learned to appreciate the outdoors and follow my own path in life.
Before landing at NMSU, I served six years in the U.S. Navy, working with F-18 C/D squadrons and developing the focus and discipline that I now bring to advising. After my military service, I moved to Las Cruces and earned my degree in Kinesiology (Exercise Science), driven by a fascination with the human body and a passion for fitness.
When I’m not meeting with students, you can usually find me on a local trail with my mountain bike or lifting weights at the Activity Center. I love staying active and pushing myself physically—and I bring that same energy to my work with students.
Why did you decide to become an Academic Advisor?
I became an Academic Advisor because I genuinely want to help students succeed—not just in the classroom, but in life. I struggled in college too. It wasn’t until I dropped my ego, started asking questions, and leaned on the support around me—tutors, professors, classmates—that things really started to click. Now, I try to be that support for others.
Whether you’re planning your schedule, chasing a big dream, or just figuring it all out one step at a time—I’m here to help you navigate the journey
