Biography

Martin, a Texas native, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for education to his role as a CAASS Academic Advisor. He earned an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and a master's in Educational Administration. Before transitioning to higher education, Martin gained valuable experience teaching in public schools. His service in the Air Force further shaped his perspective and enhanced his dedication to helping students achieve their academic and personal goals.

Why and How Martin Decided on His College Major 

Martin entered college with a clear interest in health and human performance, which led him to pursue a degree in Kinesiology. His passion for understanding how the body functions and the importance of physical activity for overall well-being solidified his decision. Martin's interest in leadership and education grew as he progressed in his studies, ultimately inspiring him to further his education with a master's in Educational Administration.

Why Martin Became an Academic Advisor 

Martin's journey to becoming an Academic Advisor was shaped by his rewarding experiences in education. Teaching in public schools gave him firsthand insight into the significant impact educators can have on students' growth and success. His time in the Air Force further instilled a desire to serve others and contribute meaningfully. As an Academic Advisor, Martin is driven by the opportunity to support students' academic journeys and help them achieve their goals, just as he was supported during his educational path.

What Martin Wishes More Students Knew About NMSU

Martin sees NMSU as a hidden gem in the Southwest, offering an unmatched blend of academic opportunities, stunning landscapes, and a true sense of community. The campus is breathtaking, with its wide-open spaces, mountain views, and state-of-the-art facilities that provide an inspiring learning and personal growth environment.

He believes that NMSU offers a more traditional college experience than other regional institutions, fostering close-knit relationships and a strong sense of belonging. From academic support services to student organizations and extracurricular activities, the university is designed to help students thrive.

Martin encourages students to take full advantage of NMSU by stepping outside their comfort zones, exploring the incredible resources, and participating in clubs or activities that spark their passions. "NMSU is truly a place where you can grow, connect, and discover your path," Martin says. "It is a special place that more people should know about."

Extra and Co-Curricular Activities Martin Participated In as an Undergraduate 

As an undergraduate, Martin was actively involved in initiatives emphasizing teamwork and leadership. He collaborated with peers to support student engagement and foster connections among students in his program. His experiences in these activities strengthened his ties to the university community and prepared him for later roles as an educator and advisor.

Challenges Martin Faced in College 

Like many students, Martin faced challenges managing his time and balancing responsibilities. Commuting to campus daily required careful planning and prioritization. He developed a habit of scheduling his week in advance to stay on track with his academic and personal goals. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance was crucial for his success and well-being. By staying organized and mindful of his mental health, Martin was able to thrive during his college journey.
