Jeff Hackney

Academic Advisor, Lead


Started working at NMSU in October, 1998 as a Financial Aid Advisor. Worked in the Financial Aid Office until June, 2002, at which time came over to the College of Education as an Academic Advisor in the Undergraduate Advisement Center. Presently, is one of three academic advisors in the COE Undergraduate Advisement Center. In addition, was an instructor for UNIV 150 courses at NMSU from Fall 2006 to Fall 2010, and for the past five years has worked with the Dean’s Office coordinating COE Retention efforts through the Freshman Academic Success (C EP 199) courses. Also, served as Vice President/Treasurer for the New Mexico Academic Advisor’s Association (NMAAA) from 2007 to 2011, and Chairperson of the Academic Advisor’s Workgroup (AAWG) at NMSU from 2014 to 2016. Currently the Academic Advising Council (AAC) Representative to the Associate Deans’ Academic Council (ADAC).

Prior to coming to NMSU, spent 10 years working as a high school/middle school teacher in the states of California, Arizona and New Mexico. Taught Math, History and Physical Education, and was a football and basketball coach. Also, spent 5 years working for United Airlines and 5 years working in the Construction Business.

Received Bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Chico in 1978 and Northern Arizona University in 1984. Received Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from New Mexico State University in 2002.

Have been married to my wife, Rose, for 30 years, and have two adult children. Anna, age 28, graduated from the College of Education at NMSU in Spring 2011 and now lives in Phoenix, AZ. Paul, age 26, attended NMSU from Fall 2009 to Fall 2011 and is an aspiring musician living in Denver, CO. Rose and Jeff are both members of their church choir, and are active participants in the Southern New Mexico Senior Tennis Circuit!
